pringtime, the ski resort closes and most everyone leaves. The snow begins to melt and patches of bulbs begin springing up out of the semi-frozen muddy ground. The marmots begin to pop up out of their holes from hibernation.

Our Marriage Begins

My husband and I were married on a Saturday, in December. It was sprinkling rain for most of the day. The sun drifted in and out of the clouds. It was a gloomy yet beautiful happy day. The coming week we spent on a honeymoon in Mexico. Upon returning from our honeymoon we immediately embarked on another thrilling adventure that would test our physical, mental and emotional strength. We moved into a ski chalet high in the rocky mountains (When I say high I mean about 9,500 ft or 2895 m above sea level).

My new father in law had bought the chalet that fall. It was in disrepair so we set about repairing it even before we moved in. I spent a few weekends retexturing and painting the walls in our basement apartment. When we moved our furniture in, the main entry tile was being removed. By the time we moved in after our wedding, the tile was placed and ready to grout. We spent a good part of the next two months replumbing, rewiring and repairing much of the Chalet.
The Chalet has three sections, two upper units and a caretaker’s suite in the basement. The caretaker’s suite where we lived had an open plan living and kitchen area. The light from outside came in through a sliding glass door window. Because the roof lines came together at the corner above the window there were many winter days where the snow would pile high above the window blocking all light and forming an iced dome around the window. The bathroom included a shower that was tiled with dark brown almost black tile. The bathroom had a single light outside the shower near the sink. It was like showering in a black hole, it felt like the light was eaten up by the shower. Thankfully the shower has since been replaced by a bright white tub and shower. The kitchen had a small nook for a table big enough to fit two. It was cozy.
Our couch was across from a large fireplace in the main living area. It was the best feature in our caretaker suite. One day I wasn’t feeling well, so I was laying on the couch watching the fire. I remember looking down and seeing a small rodent groping around the living room in search of food.

I was startled and let out a quick screech. Since I wasn’t actually scared I didn’t continue to scream. But, I scared the poor creature out of its mind. It rushed about bumping into the coffee table and couch and walls. It ran under the edge of the couch I was sitting on, then my husband rushed in and caught it. He set it free outside where it could live a normal underground mole life.
